REBUILDING A FORGOTTEN CATHEDRAL
For centuries, Bana Cathedral stood as one of the great monuments of Georgian Christianity.
Built in the historic region of Tao, it became an important center of Georgian faith, culture, and history. Today, the historic Bana Cathedral lies in modern-day Turkey, near the village of Penek, where only the ruins of this once-great monument remain.
Wars, political upheavals, and centuries of abandonment left Bana in ruins — but its memory was never lost.
Today, Akhali Bana — “New Bana” — seeks to give this heritage a new chapter in Georgia.
At the heart of the project is the construction of the Church of the Resurrection, inspired by the unique architecture of the ancient Bana Cathedral.
But Akhali Bana goes far beyond the construction of a church.
A PLACE BUILT FOR THE FUTURE
Akhali Bana is envisioned as a large spiritual, educational, social, and cultural center, eventually bringing together more than 30 initiatives in one place.
The project will include a church and monastery, a vocational school, a higher education institution, schools and training programs, a library, museums and exhibition spaces, traditional craft workshops, research centers, sports facilities, medical centers, support and care spaces for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, as well as an orphanage and a shelter.
A vocational school has already been built and is currently operating, while construction of the Church of the Resurrection continues.
The goal is not only to preserve Georgian Christian heritage, but to create a living place capable of serving and supporting the local community for generations to come.
WHY HOLY SHADOWS SUPPORTS AKHALI BANA
During our trip to Georgia, we had the opportunity to visit Akhali Bana, to see the project and its construction with our own eyes, and to meet those working on its realization.
Holy Shadows has always aimed to be more than a clothing brand. Since its launch in 2025, a percentage of all our sales have been dedicated to supporting ecclesiastical causes and charitable missions.
